The cost of Bariatric surgery can be quite high. The typical price of an operation can be $25,000 or more. Medical insurance coverage varies by state and insurance provider, and although some states have legislation in place that requires insurers to offer weight loss surgery for patients, providing it meets health criteria laid down by the National Institutes of Health, other states do not. This means that patients who would benefit from bariatric surgery often have to contend with providers that have not yet accepted that this kind of weight loss surgery can deliver powerful medical benefits that will save them money in the long run. A patient encountering this problem may have to work with his or her surgeon to prove to the health insurance provider that the proposed surgery is not a cosmetic procedure, but a potentially life-saving operation that will minimize future health problems.

Individuals who are interested in bariatric surgery and are on Medicare will be glad to know that it covers weight loss surgery for morbidly obese patients with an obesity-related or condition. Morbid obesity is defined as 100 or more pounds overweight or a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more.

Of course, the costs do not end once a patient successfully undergoes bariatric surgery. Because weight loss can be significant, many individuals are left with loose, sagging skin that no longer has the elasticity to fit the new, slimmer shape. Since neither exercise nor diet will help tighten loose skin, many bariatric patients choose plastic surgery as a remedy. The cost of bariatric-related plastic surgery operations can vary significantly, depending on the patient?s condition, complications, the type of anesthesia, and other factors.

Some of the more popular post-bariatric surgery procedures include: abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), body lift (circumferential panniculectomy), brachioplasty (arm lift), breast lift, augmentation, or reduction, face and/or neck lift, and thigh lift.

Top Ten Ways To Loose Weight

November 21st, 2008 — 11:39 am

One way to lose weight is to just stop eating. It sounds simple but in reality you have to know what you are doing to get any long term weight loss benefits from fasting. Let?s look at the weakness and strengths of fasting for weight loss.

Like most forms of dieting, fasting can be used to bring about dramatic but temporary reductions of weight. You can go on a long fast, taking nothing but juice or eating grapes or taking some other low calorie meal substitute for several weeks, and while you are on the fast you will certainly lose weight. However, during the fast you may not be able to carry on your normal social interactions. It?s not so easy to sit around sipping carrot juice while the rest of your family is eating a normal meal.

Another problem with long fasting is that your body requires vital nutrients (vitamins, minerals, protein) and your favorite juice may not contain them. Long fasting without proper medical supervision can be dangerous.

Finally, a major problem with this kind of fasting is that once you stop fasting and resume eating your normal diet, you are likely to gain back all the weight that you have lost during your crash weight loss fast.

So, does fasting have any place in a weight loss plan? Yes it does. Periodic fasting is one of the secrets of a long and healthy life. Our body?s digestive organs require a rest from time to time, just as we require days off from work. One-day fasting done in a methodical and regular manner provides the kind of rest that helps our digestive system, aids in the elimination of toxins from our body, and, yes, also helps us to lose weight in a healthy and sustainable way.

How to Do Proper Fasting

Here is a method of doing one day fasts, taking no food and (if your body is strong) no water in a period from the sunrise of one day to the sunrise of the next day.

Successful fasting has three stages: preparation, the actual fast, and breaking the fast. Each one of these stages is important.

Preparation

If you are not prepared both mentally and physically you will find it difficult to go one day without food. The mental preparation is simple, but very important. The night before the fast you have to take a firm determination that tomorrow you are going to fast, that you are not going to eat any food. If you fix your mind in advance then you will not start deliberating during the fasting day whether you should continue or not to continue. If you are undecided or waffling you can always find a hundred reasons why you should start eating!

Physical preparation is also important. The day before you fast you should eat a normal amount of food and take a good amount of liquids (especially if you are going to be fasting without taking any liquids). If you miss some meals on the day before fasting, then you may start feeling hungry during the fasting period. If you do not take enough liquids, especially during the night before the fast, then you will feel uncomfortable when you are fasting.

If you are physically and mentally prepared you will not feel very hungry while you are fasting. Once you decide to fast, your hunger just ?shuts off? for the fasting period. This sounds hard to believe, but if you do it a few times you will see that it is true.

The Fasting Day

It is best to do light physical tasks and concentrate more on intellectual and spiritual work during the fasting period. It is not a good idea to spend your time thinking about what you are going to eat tomorrow! If you have prepared yourself properly this shouldn?t be a problem and you can use the time that you gain by not eating to do some constructive things that you normally don?t get time to do.

Breaking the Fast

One of the benefits of fasting is that it helps to eliminate toxins from the body. However, you can only get this benefit if you break your fast correctly. On the morning following the fasting day, take two glasses of lemon water. Put the juice of have of a lemon in one glass and add a bit of salt. (The drink should taste both lemony and salty). After some time, you can eat your breakfast. The lemon water will help you to flush your digestive system with a strong bowel movement and many toxins will be eliminated.

One day fasts like this can be done twice a month. This kind of fasting will give rest to your digestive organs, help eliminate toxins, build your will power and strength of mind. On top of this, the overall reduction in calories that you get from going two days without food each month, will definitely be one of the elements of a balanced and sustainable weight loss program.

After you?ve had the RNY surgery, there is one thing you immediately begin to notice.. and that?s what I call the ?Take-Home Box Overload?. This is what happens inside your refrigerator as a result of you brining home all of those take-home boxes from restaurants because you cannot finish the meal. Even prior to surgery, you couldn?t often finish the meal when some restaurants serve such large portions. So packing up the leftovers after an eat-out meal seems natural to you, so you do it often.

PROBLEM ONE: The Take-Home Boxes can actually establish huge neighborhoods inside your fridge!

PROBLEM TWO: You feel you MUST NOT throw all of that food out because you have been taught from the early days of your crib that you SHALL NOT WASTE FOOD because of all the starving children elsewhere who certainly would appreciate the food you are wasting, right? Frankly, when you heard that guilt-phrase that was supposed to motivate you to gobble up, didn?t you feel even MORE compelled NOT to finish eating and MAIL your uneaten portion to those starving children? I never really understood that philosophy of telling me I better eat because some poor children don?t have enough to eat?. A puzzlement.

PROBLEM THREE: Because of the guilt, you decide that you?ll just ?snack? on the food in the take-home boxes. So you snack, snack again, snack some more, and HOORAY? you?ve eaten everything in the box and you didn?t waste the food! OH, but you?ve done yourself a BAD turn!

Bad turn? How?

Let?s consider that the food in that take-home box could contain 1500 to 2000 calories. So what? Well, when you eat those leftovers, you are consuming those ADDITIONAL 1500 to 2000 calories that you DON?T need in your eating routine? especially if you eat them as SNACKS and not meals. It is a DANGEROUS thing to leave those take-home boxes in the fridge when they scream at you to be consumed. Don?t listen to them!

Here?s what you need to do instead:

If you truly plan on eating the leftovers as ?another meal portion?, then you should wrap them according and place them in your FREEZER for eating LATER. You know that adage, ?out of sight, out of mind??? well, this is that basic concept. By doing this regularly, you?ll be able to rotate your frozen meal portions for a better variety rather than eating the leftovers time after time. How appealing is it to eat six servings of chili in a row? It?s not? so freeze the portions and eat them later.

The FREEZER is your solution to curb the ?snacking? out of those take-home boxes. So use it as your new best friend, you new best meal-planner buddy, and your calorie-saver!

Getting use to the idea of tossing out food is a hard one, but it?s something you have to get used to as well. The dog or cat will always be there to volunteer to eat what you can?t?, and the animals will show you a deeper devotion that ever imaginable! And your household loved ones often appreciate you giving them an open invitation to anything they find in the take-home boxes.

Get a grip on this early so you won?t sabotage yourself with those additional calories that will creep up on you if you fall pray to snacking or through guilt-eating. As an RNY patient, you are only to consume a minimal amount of calories anyway.. so don?t fall into the trap of eating more than you need. This could be a factor as to why you seem to not be losing enough weight or why you are gaining some back after awhile.

Bottom Line: Take-Home Boxes can be Dangerous? Tame them before they do you harm!

?Mirror, mirror on the wall, who?s the fattest of them all?

Though my mirror would not magically utter my name, my eyes would move unconsciously to the ugly bulge that has formed near the middle part of my body. I know I am the one. For years, I have continued to hate the mirror. I even attempted a lot many times to do away with even traces of the thing. But, my wife wouldn?t allow (women and mirrors go hand in hand).

Finally, I understood that closing my eyes to the fat won?t make me less fat. Weight loss drug was one such step which I undertook to do away with the fat. A weight loss drug works by ddecreasing appetite, increasing satisfaction, decreasing fat absorption and increasing the rate of metabolism.

Weight loss drugs refer to over-the-counter medication or prescription drugs. The drugs are manufactured from a large number of chemical as well as herbal formulations such as amphetamines, appetite suppressants, benzene derivatives, herbal extracts, hormones and many more.

The use of weight loss drugs, to the confusion of users, does not offer exactly similar benefits to all. While some may benefit from it, others may not. This is a mystery that scientists till date are trying to decipher. Scientists have come to the conclusion that obesity or overweight is a complex illness. There is not only the physical determinant to it such as larger intake of food or more fat absorption. There are behavioural and psychological aspects to the illness as well. Therefore, it is imperative that obesity be treated by taking the entire picture in mind.

A few drugs have had enough research; certain others are still remaining to be studied in depth. The key to the use of weight loss drug is to examine properly if the drug is effective. Only properly researched drugs must be used to avoid side effects.

Weight loss drugs demand perseverance on the part of user in his dietary and workout habits. It is all the more important that user reduces intakes of fatty foods and consume more of low carb diets. Daily exercise is also important. Muscles are an important method of burning calories. Besides, it gives a good shape to ones body.

Weight loss drugs are not entirely free from drawbacks. Many weight loss drugs have been investigated to result into side effects such as cardiac arrest. Besides, it is often quite tricky to pinpoint if a particular weight loss drug was behind the weight one lost. Any weight loss program is often accompanied by diet and exercise; thus making it difficult to decide the contribution of the drug. Despite these criticisms, the desire of humans to find a magic pill for weight loss continues.

Some things in your life need not be changed but those extra pounds are not one of them. It is human tendency to have more and more of anything. Having excess intake of food is one of them. But it is a tendency which can give way to more fat than your body needs, that way making you obese.

The obesity is termed as a disease. Science today has progressed so much that it has given way to multiple ways to deal with obesity. The major ways to deal with obesity are exercises, controlled diet, surgery, obesity removal pills and liposuction. Amongst them surgery and liposuction are costly affairs. Exercises and controlled diet program are the best and sure way to success but are time consuming.

So, the best way to put forward is a combination of diet pills, exercises and a controlled diet program. The diet pills give a short term solution to remove obesity. And if it is used in conjunction with exercise and controlled diet one can rest in peace of the fact that he would be losing weight in no time and will be sustained for long.

Amongst the various diet pills available Acomplia is in the news these days. Acomplia (Rimonabant) and is developed by Sanofi-Aventis. It is approved for sale in the UK and the EU and is waiting for approval from FDA for sale in the USA. But it is hard to get Acomplia from local pharmacy or online pharmacy as it is just introduced. But there are certain online pharmacies which sell Acomplia. It would be worthwhile to go and search Acomplia from online pharmacies rather than running around the pharmacies in your locality in the quest for losing weight.

This is how Acomplia works - there is a receptor called CB1 which is activated by endogenous cannabinoids and Acomplia helps in blocking the endogenous cannabinoids. It releases chemicals such as anadamide which increases appetite. But as Acomplia (Rimonabant) blocks the endogenous cannabinoids the appetite becomes lower.

As stated earlier, Acomplia (Rimonabant) is a short term weight loss drug so, it is imperative that a person should not continue it for long. If you are thinking of taking it you should consult a doctor before taking it. It has side effects like depression, nausea and irritability. But the side effects are mild and for short period only. It is advised that a person consult a doctor in case any side effects or symptoms appear after taking the drug. There is saying that goes this way ?Look before you leap? and it applies in case of taking Acomplia too.

Health Ways To Lose Weight

November 20th, 2008 — 02:19 pm

When I work with my clients, one of the key elements that I incorporate into all of our workouts is INTENSITY. In my view, intensity is the most critical aspect of any exercise regime and can mean the difference between someone who reaches their goals and someone who doesn?t. Increasing your workout?s intensity will stimulate your body to burn more calories and induce a greater cardiovascular response. It will also allow you to have a more time efficient workout.

If you are looking to burn fat and become more toned, then increasing your exercise intensity is critical. Many people have the misconception that if you workout at a higher intensity you will no longer be burning fat since you will be in your ?cardio zone?. Whereas, if you keep your intensity low for a longer duration you will burn more fat since you will be in your ?fat burning zone?. Let me clarify this for you once and for all. By training at a low intensity (<70% max) it is true that you use fat as your predominant source of fuel. While exercising at a higher intensity (>75% max) your main fuel source is carbohydrate but you will ultimately burn more calories. And since 1 pound of fat is equivalent to 3500 calories, the ultimate goal is to burn as many calories as possible to create a negative energy balance!

One of the best ways to achieve this intensity is through the use of full-body compound circuit training (strength training) in conjunction with interval training (on the cardio equipment). The benefit of full body compound training is that since it utilizes more muscle in any given movement you burn more calories. The intensity of the workout also means that each exercise becomes more challenging as your heart rate is sustained at a much higher level.

Here are a couple of benefits to following an exercise program combining circuit training and interval training:

1. Intervals and circuits vastly reduce boredom. Traditional steady state cardio training and/or weight lifting can become quite boring. Interval training and circuit training offer more variety and excitement to your workouts.

2. Interval training increases post-exercise energy expenditure (calories burned following exercise) more than steady-state exercise, which means that more fat is burned. After intense exercise, the body needs extra calories as it works to repair muscles, replace energy stores (i.e. carbohydrate) and restore the body to its normal state (e.g. reduce heart rate). As this can take many hours, you will keep on burning more calories long after the workout is over. In fact, research shows that metabolic rate is higher for several hours following interval training compared to steady state exercise.

3. Interval training burns more calories. As an example, 30 minutes on an Elliptical machine using a steady state program will burn roughly 292 calories, whereas 30 minutes of intervals will burn approximately 584 calories!

Here is a sample workout that will leave you huffing and puffing:

Warm-up
bike, treadmill, elliptical, rower 5-10 min

Circuit (45 seconds for each exercise, with 15 seconds rest between exercises) 5-7 min
Lunge walks with lateral raises
Plank (on stability ball)
Squats with medicine ball shoulder press
Push-ups
Side Bridges
Reverse Pull-ups
Burpies

Interval Training (cardio equipment)
20 sec @ 100% : 40 sec @ 70% x 5 5 min

Repeat Circuit and Interval 3 times

Total Workout Time: 45 ? 60 min

If you would like to experience what an intense workout feels like then please inquire about the revolutionary Fitter U MP3 personal training program! For a fraction of the cost of regular one-on-one training, this proven MP3 program will ensure you get to your fitness goals in less time!

Weigh Loss

November 20th, 2008 — 02:06 pm

Have you lost weight in the past only to regain it a short time later? Have you followed every diet including Atkins, South Beach, the Drinking Man’s diet, the Peanut Butter diet, or even the Chocolate Diet? All of these diets work, and none of them work, meaning you can and probably do lose weight on any of them, but you won’t keep it off. Why not? Because the day will come when the diet is over and you’re right back to your regular routine; the same routine that got you fat in the first place.

In the past diets carried a warning not to stay on them longer than the prescribed period; usually two weeks, some a mere three days. Today’s popular diets are attempting to style themselves as lifestyle choices, but this isn’t working either. People want to be able to eat a sandwich now and then. They want the burger and the bun! Strive for balance choosing foods you prefer, and you’ll have a better chance at lasting weight loss success.

Small Changes: Big Answer to Weight Loss Blues

Start today, and work one day at a time making one or two small changes such as switching to the calorie-free soft drinks then weaning yourself down to two or less a day (if you drink more than that now of course). Changes don’t have to be drastic. In fact trying to make drastic changes in your lifestyle never works because while you may be happy in the beginning, you slowly grow miserable toward the end. In fact, that’s the problem right there: you anticipate an end.

Weight Loss Comes Down to Choices

Talk to people who’ve lost weight and kept it off. They’ll say, “This is a lifestyle.” It’s about choices you make every day. Are you choosing to take an extra helping, even though you’re comfortably full? Change that one behavior and you’re on your way. Do you choose to take the bag of chips to the couch? Change that, in fact just stop eating on the couch entirely and you’re one step closer. Eliminate the habit of grabbing a few bites on your way past the candy dish, that alone can shave several pounds. I once lost eight pounds simply by eliminating the candy dish I kept at my desk (not to mention the money I saved not buying a couple pounds of candy a week).

Choose one small habit or behavior at a time, not your entire existence, and you’ll have a much better chance to reach your weight loss goals.

Plan For Weight Loss And

November 20th, 2008 — 01:53 pm

Recently, someone asked me for my views about the amount of daily calories they should consume, and whether a 800-1000 calories’ intake can help to speed up their weight loss.

I thought this is something you’d be interested in, so I’m going to share my thoughts with you as well.

You’ve probably heard this many times: consuming too many calories makes us overweight. Of course, this is TRUE…

Both eating less or exercising more will most definitely result in weight loss.

It’s a simple matter of arithmatic — if your “calories out” is more than your “calories in”, you will lose weight.

Thus, it becomes very natural of us to think that if cutting calories is such a good thing, then the more you cut, the better, right? Doesn’t this mean that we’ll lose the excess weight faster?

In reality, it is not so.

Making a too-drastic cut in your caloric intake is a very, very bad idea.

If you have been dieting for a while, you would notice that the extremely low-calorie diets have been around for the longest time. But interestingly, most of the time they don’t lead to permanent weight loss.

Nonetheless, I’ve heard people discussing diets that recommend as low as 800 calories a day! I’m here to tell you that this kind of low levels is downright dangerous for your health.

According to weight loss experts, cutting your intake down to, or under, 1000 calories per day sets you up for an inevitable failure.

Why?

Because when you reduce your caloric intake down to this low, you are actually sending your body into “starvation mode” by eating far too little.

In simple terms, your body will start to think that there is a famine. And in order to maintain your weight while it “thinks” you are starving, your body’s metabolism rate will actually slow down. And your body will then start to store the calories into your fat cells instead.

If you want to prevent yourself from falling into this starvation mode “trap”, you must first know how many
calories your body requires everyday to maintain itself. A quick and easy way to do this is to use the tools that are found on our Web site at
http://www.weight-loss-for-women-over-40.com/bmr-calorie-needs.htm
to give you an estimate, or you can check with a dietitian or nutritionist.

Whenever you restrict calories below the level that you body needs to function, your body senses starvation and switches into the “conservation” mode. The more you restrict calories and the longer you diet, your metabolism will slow down further and the more your fat cells will fight back. Don’t forget, you need your metabolism to burn your fat into energy for your body to function properly.

Besides, there is another reason why extreme low-cal diets won’t work — it is not an easy feat to stay on it for long. Dieters who have gone on these extreme low-cal diets would also experience unfavorable side effects such as headaches, weakness, light-headedness and a reduction in their levels of concentration.

Finally, when you experience extreme hunger, the next thing you’ll tend to do is to “binge eat”. And guess what? In the end, after all the initial effort you’ve put into losing the weight, you will actually gain back more weight than you had lost during the diet.

And the worst thing is: The next time you try to go on a diet again, your body gets smarter and the fat cells will expand more to store more calories as they are getting ready to go through another “famine”. Your metabolism will also be reduced tremendously. You’ll find that you are not able to lose the weight as fast or as easy as the previous time. And you’ll get frustrated because you’ve had to deprive yourself of your favorite foods. So what do you do next? You overeat again.

So, stay away from these low-cal diets. They aren’t worth your time!

How To Lose Weight A Week

November 20th, 2008 — 08:58 am

In simple terms, carbohydrates are broken down by various enzymes into simple sugars then glucose so they can be absorbed into the blood. Digestive enzymes are like biological scissors - they chop long starch molecules into simpler ones.

According to experts, if we cannot burn all the fat we consume, the remainder is stored as fat tissue. This fat-burning ability is determined by the amount of insulin in our bloodstream. [Note: a major factor in insulin release is the glycemic index (GI) value of the carb-foods or meal consumed.] When insulin levels are low, we burn mainly fat. When they are high, we burn mainly carbs. But a problem arises when insulin levels remain constantly high, as in the case of individuals suffering from insulin insensitivity. In such cases, the constant need to burn carbs reduces our fat-burning ability. Result? More fat is stored as fatty (adipose) tissue.

Generally speaking, the speed of digestion is determined by the chemical nature of the carb itself, and thus how “resistant” it is to the activity of the enzymes. A simple sugar is usually much less resistant than a starch, and is digested or metabilized much faster. Things that slow down digestion include: the presence of acid (from gastric juices or the food itself), and the presence of soluble fiber.

High Insulin Levels May Increase Risk of Obesity

This is why experts are linking high insulin levels, together with a reduced ability to burn fat, with obesity. And as you can see, high insulin levels are typically determined by the type of carbs we eat. High GI foods or meals trigger higher levels of insulin than intermediate or low GI foods. This is why the Glycemic Index is considered to be so important in assessing carb eating habits.

As we have seen, the human body is fuelled by glucose. Therefore all foods must be converted into glucose before they can be used as fuel. Carbohydrates are more easily converted into glucose than protein or fat, and are considered to be the body’s “preferred” source of energy, and the brain’s essential source of energy.

Simple carbs (excepting fruit sugar) are more easily converted into glucose because their molecular structure breaks down faster in the stomach and small intestine. Therefore these carbs raise glucose levels in the bloodstream quite rapidly (less than 30 minutes). This explains why diabetics, who occasionally suffer from an excessively low blood-glucose level, can quickly restore their balance by eating simple carb-foods, like sweets.
